Meet: Participants drawn for many reasons ■ Continued from Page 1 three events. Members of the Oregon Track Club and Track City Track Club participate for free. “It provides a neat opportunity for people who like to do it to go out and compete,” Stream said. Stream is in the middle of his fourth year as meet director. The meet itself is in its 48th year. People attend the meet for many reasons, Stream said. Some come to prepare for bigger meets and some come for the exercise in the outdoors. Lloyd Tolbert is a meet volun teer whose daughter occasional ly participates. Originally, he volunteered because he is a friend of Streams, but he quickly grew to love what he was doing. “It’s really fun,” Tolbert said. “I’m a kids fan.” Parents enjoy the meet, as well. “He’s the next Prefontaine,” Judith Dinan proclaimed of her 10-year-old son Joseph Lincoln Dinan. “I do a lot of good jumps when CHAD PATTESON/Emerald John Brauer and his 3-year-old daughter Ali cool off after competing in the 100-meter run. This was their second year of participation in the All Comers Track Meet. I really put my brain to it,” Joseph said only moments before a jump that landed him 4th in the long jump.” “He likes to run,” Joseph’s fa ther Robert Lincoln said, display ing a broad smile. Mike Brodey sat in the grass of Hayward Field watching his 11 year-old daughter, Sammi. “Sammi loves to run,” Brodey said. “She’s fast.” £(It provides a neat opportunity for people who like to do it to go out and compete. Marie Stream Meet organizer What does Sammi, the 100 meter, 200-meter and long jump competitor like about the All Comers Meet? “The whole entire thing,” she said. “It’s relaxing. You get to watch other people.” John Brauer, father of 3-year old Ali, came back for a second year in the All-Comers Meet. “She’s just having fun out there,” he said, “but that’s what this age is for.” On a sunny Eugene evening, hundreds of parents cheered on hundreds of children. Laughter filled Hayward Field and Tracktown, U.S.A., intro duced itself to a new generation.
